How to Speed Up a Slow Phone in 2026: 6 Fixes That Actually Work

A phone that was fast when you bought it and has slowed to a crawl two or three years later is one of the most common technology frustrations. The good news: most slow phone problems have practical solutions that do not require buying a new device. Here are six fixes that actually work, in order from easiest to most involved.

Fix 1: Free Up Storage Space (5 Minutes)

This is the most commonly overlooked cause of slow phones. When a phone’s storage is nearly full — typically above 80–85% capacity — performance suffers noticeably: apps take longer to load, the camera is slower to process and save images, and the system struggles to maintain virtual memory efficiently. Android and iOS both degrade under storage pressure in similar ways.

Check your storage: Settings → Storage (Android) or Settings → General → iPhone Storage (iOS). The breakdown shows which app categories and specific apps are consuming the most space. Common culprits: the camera roll (download a year’s worth of photos to a computer or cloud backup and delete from the phone), WhatsApp media (images and videos received in chats accumulate quietly to gigabytes), and cached data from streaming apps. Freeing 3–5GB of space from a nearly full phone often produces immediately noticeable performance improvements.

Fix 2: Restart the Phone Weekly (30 Seconds)

Smartphones, like computers, accumulate background processes, memory leaks from apps that have been used but not fully closed, and cached system data that grows over time. A full restart clears all of this in 30 seconds. Many “slow phone” complaints disappear immediately after a restart and would not have occurred if the phone were restarted regularly.

Setting a weekly reminder to restart — or developing the habit of restarting when you charge overnight on Sundays — is the easiest maintenance habit in mobile computing. It does not solve fundamental performance problems, but it reliably addresses the accumulated-process slowness that occurs in phones that have been in use for weeks without a restart.

Fix 3: Restrict Background App Activity (10 Minutes)

Apps running in the background consume memory and occasionally CPU even when you are not using them — syncing data, checking for notifications, refreshing content. On Android, go to Settings → Battery → Battery Usage to see which apps are consuming battery (and by extension, processing resources) in the background. Restrict background activity for apps you rarely use by disabling background refresh or battery use for those apps individually. iOS has a similar setting under Settings → General → Background App Refresh.

This fix is particularly effective on phones where many social media, news, and communication apps have been installed. Each individually-installed app adds a small background resource cost; collectively, they can significantly affect both battery life and performance responsiveness.

Fix 4: Update the OS and Apps (5 Minutes Plus Download Time)

OS and app updates frequently include performance optimisations, memory management improvements, and bug fixes that directly affect speed. A phone running outdated software may be running slower than the same hardware running current software. Check for OS updates in Settings → Software Update (both iOS and Android). Enable automatic app updates in your app store settings so installed apps stay current without manual management.

Note: occasionally, a new OS update introduces performance issues on older hardware. If performance worsened after a specific update, check community forums for whether the issue is known and whether a fix update has been released.

Fix 5: Reduce Visual Effects and Animation (10 Minutes)

On Android, reducing system animation scale makes the interface feel significantly faster without affecting any functionality. Go to Settings → About Phone, tap “Build Number” seven times to enable developer options, then go to Settings → Developer Options and set Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale, and Animator Duration Scale all to “0.5x.” The phone will feel noticeably snappier immediately as animations are shorter and transitions faster.

On iPhone, go to Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion. This replaces parallax effects and certain animations with simpler cross-fades, which are faster to render on older hardware and can meaningfully reduce perceived lag on iPhone 12 and older models.

Fix 6: Factory Reset With Fresh Setup (2 Hours)

If the above fixes do not restore acceptable performance, a factory reset and fresh start is the most effective solution short of hardware repair. Over months and years of use, accumulated app data, system caches, configuration drift, and poorly-behaved apps leave residue that a factory reset clears entirely.

Before resetting: ensure a complete, recent backup exists and that you have login credentials for all accounts the phone is connected to. Reset via Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings (iPhone) or Settings → General Management → Reset → Factory Data Reset (Android). Set up the phone fresh rather than restoring from a backup — restoring from backup can re-import some of the accumulated cruft that caused the slowness.

A factory-reset phone typically returns to near-original performance. If performance remains poor after a factory reset, the issue is likely hardware-related — degraded battery affecting performance (common; see battery replacement) or physical storage degradation (less common; may indicate the phone needs replacement).
