It reads your emails before scheduling a reply, understands “add that restaurant we discussed yesterday to my list” without clarification, and processes complex compound instructions without the “I can help with that, but…” deflection that characterised previous generations. The quality is limited to a specific Apple aesthetic — clean, illustrated, recognisably Apple-designed — which is not wrong but is less flexible than Midjourney or Stable Diffusion. The on-device processing and clear commercial rights are genuine advantages for users who need simple illustrations without the complexity or cost of third-party generators.
The Clean Up tool in Photos — which removes unwanted objects from images using on-device AI — is genuinely excellent. The background reconstruction is among the best available on any consumer device, matching Google’s Magic Eraser on the Pixel 9a and in some test cases outperforming it on complex backgrounds. This is a day-to-day-useful feature rather than a novelty.
The Private Cloud Compute Architecture
Apple’s core privacy differentiator is Private Cloud Compute — a system where, when on-device processing cannot handle a task, the query is sent to Apple-operated servers running the same model code that Apple publishes for external audit. Apple makes a verifiable commitment that these servers cannot log or retain user data, backed by periodic third-party security audits. Whether this commitment is fully trustworthy is a matter of philosophical trust in institutional commitments, but the architecture is meaningfully more privacy-protective than sending data to standard cloud AI servers with opaque logging policies.
Is Apple Intelligence 2.0 Worth Upgrading For?
For existing users on supported devices — iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and later, iPads with M-series chips, and Macs with M-series chips — the features arrive free with the software update. There is no reason not to enable them and evaluate which ones fit your workflow. For buyers considering a new device purchase specifically to access Apple Intelligence features: the core features are useful but not transformative enough to justify a hardware upgrade on their own. Buy the new iPhone or Mac for the hardware; treat Apple Intelligence as a bonus that improves over time, not the primary purchase rationale.
